CITY OF TARIJA
Archaeological and paleontological museum, the museum presents an invaluable cultural service to the local society and to all who visit it, especial for the paleontological riches there. Geographically Tarija is in a basin of fluvio-lacustrine sedimentary rock that sits uncomfortably on a base of paleozoic rock. These sediments have significant importance for the mammal fossils found within them. To date 55 fossil species have been found including the Covieronius tarijensis, Megatherium tarijensis, and the Glyptodontiidae family among others. Fossils can be found in the different sedimentary layers and it is very common to find them partially uncovered.
The Golden House was built by Moises Navajas Ichazo and Esperansa Morales Serrano over a 16 year period between 1887 to 1903. It was built for the Italian-born Swiss brothers Miguel and Antonio Camponovo who had it built in the Art Nouveau style – modern and floral – that were popular in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century. The pictorial were completed by the italian artists Jose Strocco and Helvecio Camponovo. Today it is used as a cultural arts center for theater, cinema, ballet and music concerts, those that stand out are the famous Abril in Tarija which includes piano and guitar competitions for different levels and is known nationally and internationally.
18th Century Cathedral. When the last Jesuits left Tarija in1767 upon the order of King Charles II of Spain they left behind some of the most beautiful colonial buildings, including the Cathedral that took 76 years to build from 1690 – 1766. Its most important characteristics are the carved wooden altarpieces of the baroque missional period, the pulpit covered in gold bread, the roof skylights that highlight the artistic details and illuminate the interior, the solid construction, the twin towers and the facade that recalls the magnificent churches of Mexico and Peru.
The Canyons National Park is located close to the city of Tarija and extends for 300Ha, it has been greatly affected by erosion.
